The streets of South Korea were flooded with a sea of people waving lanterns and lighting up the night in happiness.
South Korean President Park Geun Hye was officially impeached and removed from office, ending her term March 10. She is the first South Korean President to be removed from office via impeachment.
Since news of Park Geun Hye’s myriad of corruption scandals were leaked, many South Koren citizens have been calling for and awaiting the impeachment of the now-former President Park.
On March 10, Korea’s first female president was officially impeached in a unanimous vote by court justices of the Constitutional Court.
The decision was streamed live on both social media and television, and when Park Geun Hye’s impeachment was announced, many of the citizens of South Korea took to the streets in celebration of democratic justice.
The celebration was an all-day, nationwide event that brought people out of their homes to share in the joy of the political victory that had been won. People crowded outside of the courthouse, holding up lanterns and flags.
