TWICE And BLACKPINK Make YouTube History, Here’s How

What record will they shatter next?

TWICE and BLACKPINK are two of the biggest girl groups in K-Pop, and that popularity has definitely reached international waters – especially via YouTube.

Now that 2018 is over, industry insiders were able to get a more accurate look at the most popular music videos of the year.

With both TWICE and BLACKPINK seem to constantly break each others’ records when it comes to YouTube views, it was no surprise that they ended up making history when it comes to YouTube charts.

More specifically, being included in the most viewed music videos for a female artist in the first 24 hours of release.

While that itself is an insanely notable achievement (and a historical moment in itself), their placements on the list were much more shocking.

The list (in order), as of January 20, 2019, is as follows:

  1. Thank U, Next – Ariana Grande
  2. LWYMMD – Taylor Swift
  3. DDU-DU DDU-DU – BLACKPINK
  4. Yes Or Yes – TWICE
  5. Hello – Adele
  6. Boom Boom – Dinah Jane
  7. Wrecking Ball – Miley Cyrus
  8. 7 Rings – Ariana Grande
  9. Bad Blood- Taylor Swift
  10. 10. Anaconda – Nicki Minaj

As you can see, both BLACKPINK and TWICE placed in the Top 5 against some heavy competition.

In fact, they’re the only K-Pop groups on this list.

BLACKPINK, specifically deserves a special shoutout as “DDU-DU DDU-DU” is the highest viewed K-Pop music video by a Korean female act.

But both BLACKPINK and TWICE’s placements on the chart are a huge achievement because it shows that both groups can go “toe-to-toe” with huge international superstars such as Ariana Grande, Taylor Swift, and Adele and still hold on their spots in the Top 5.

Especially when one takes into account that the majority of their promotions have been locked to Asia and are not as internationally expansive as other artists on this list.

While the list provided didn’t include the exact viewing numbers, a bit of research shows the following stats for the Top 5:

  1. Thank U, Next – 55.4 million
  2. LWYMMD – 43.2 million
  3. DDU-DU DDU-DU – 36.2 million
  4. Yes Or Yes – 31.4 million
  5. Hello – 27.7 million

2018 really was a great year for K-Pop internationally, and with planned US tour stops for both groups in 2019, we hope that they reach even greater heights.

Perhaps on the Billboard Hot 100 charts? We’re hoping!
