Earlier this month, American basketball player LeBron James shared his thoughts about the ending of Squid Game, Netflix’s biggest show, and earned a response from the creator Hwang Dong Hyuk.

During a postgame interview earlier this month, James and Anthony Davis were talking about Squid Game when James expressed his disapproval over the show’s surprising ending.

Yeah, I did finish it. Did you finish it? You watched it? You done? Yeah, I didn’t like the ending though. No, I know they started off with a season two but like, get on the f**king flight, go see your daughter, bro. Like, what are you doing?

Major spoiler warning: For context, the ending of Squid Game sees the main character (played by Lee Jung Jae) abandon plans to fly to America and see his daughter to instead seek revenge on those who forced him through the madness of the death game.

Hwang fired back at James in an interview with The Guardian, reportedly “giggling” before asking the interviewer, “Have you seen Space Jam 2?” (Space Jam 2 (2021), also known as Space Jam: A New Legacy was a sequel to Space Jam (1996) that starred LeBron James.) The Squid Game creator then went on to defend his own ending for the show.

LeBron James is cool and can say what he wants. I respect that. I’m very thankful he watched the whole series. But I wouldn’t change my ending. That’s my ending. If he has his own ending that would satisfy him, maybe he could make his own sequel. I’ll check it out and maybe send him a message saying, ‘I liked your whole show, except the ending.’

LeBron James responded to Hwang’s comment on Twitter, saying, “This can’t be real right??!! I hope not.

Considering Squid Game has been formulating in Hwang Dong Hyuk’s mind for the past decade, it’s unsurprising that he would stick by his intended ending for the show. While the series’ first season ended in a place that could easily lead into a second one, no concrete plans have been made so far. Read more about the potential for a second season below.
