Korean Police Announces Cooperative Investigation With the FBI for the Cases Surrounding “Nth Room”

“We are well-aware of the public’s opinion that the users of the group weren’t simply bystanders, but that they are also perpetrators of sexual assault.” – Police

In light of the recent news surrounding the “Nth Room” on Telegram and the sexual assaults of underage girls that took place within, the Korean police announced that they’ll be conducting a cooperative investigation with the FBI.

Following the arrest of Cho Joo Bin, one of the main administrators of the chatroom, Seoul Central Police Department has been investigating the users that participated in the group in order to watch child pornography.

The police expressed that they are working hard to charge the users of the chatroom as well.

We are well-aware of the public’s opinion that the users of the group weren’t simply bystanders, but that they are also perpetrators of sexual assault. We will investigate so that they can be punished by the law.

According to the police, the users that instigated the acts with comments such as “Send us something good” and “Give us some good stuff” will be investigated first, followed by an investigation of the remainder of the onlookers who simply watched.

Although the police put together a specialized task force of 6 agents for the case, they’ve been faced with limitations due to the fact that Telegram isn’t a Korean messenger.

Despite the police’s efforts to request the deletion of illegal materials on Telegram, they received no response followed by the deletion only 2 to 3 days later.

For that reason, the Korean police will be holding a cooperative investigation with the FBI in order to find Telegram’s headquarters and conduct the necessary investigations.

We’re cooperating with the FBI and HSI to look into Telegram’s headquarters. As soon as we find the headquarters, we will use diplomatic methods to ask for their cooperation.

In light of the recent news, a national petition was mobilized demanding for all persons involved in “Nth Room” to be exposed and punished, and it has gained over 1.5 million signatures thus far.
