Let us have short hair.

She wrote, in an inspiring caption for other short-haired pictures, that “feminism is not for creating a male vs. female division,” but for ensuring that everyone gets to “have [their] own freedom.”

I’m a female born between male and female. I’m a female who is attracted to male.

I’m aware of the differences in everyone’s interpretations of what ‘feminism’ is and how that has led it to be considered socially problematic right now. But as a female myself, it is incredibly difficult to sit back and watch the term ‘feminist’ become so terribly misunderstood as a hateful one.

‘Feminism’ is a movement and ‘feminists’ are people who advocate for this movement, meant to help females break gender stereotypes and strive for equal rights as a human being. Feminists aim to change old social norms and gender roles, while establishing equal opportunities and outcomes for women that are equal to those for men.

None of this is for creating a male vs. female division! It’s to let female-born humans be what they want to be and to let them practice their human rights. I decided to share this post to ask that we please stop distorting what ‘feminism’ and ‘feminists’ mean and stand for.

We all have our own freedom.

The medal-winning athlete An San came face to face with “an online hate campaign” for her short hairstyle, led by some radical anti-feminist community sites run by male netizens.

The said “campaign” has since garnered some international attention — which, simultaneously, sparked intense criticism for the anti-feminist haters. An San continues to receive a flood of support from both Korean and international fans.

  • “God forbid they focus on talent instead 😒😒”
  • “What year do we live in? Seriously.”
  • Really!?!? People need to get a life!”
  • “Oh my gosh, who cares! Maybe she likes her hair short so it doesn’t get stuck in her bow!”
  • “Seriously?! So many haters. Let women be themselves.”
  • “People don’t have enough business of their own to mind? She looks amazing! Plus, what has hair got to do with the fact she’s an Olympian!!! How many of those haters are elite athletes?”
  • “How disappointing that she has achieved so much and the debate is still about how she looks.”

Congratulations to An San for her victories at the Olympic Games Tokyo 2020!
