The Difference Between BTS’s “Artist V” And “Kim Taehyung”

“Singularity” represents his struggle to distinguish his identity.

BTS have uploaded the first of the “Proof of Inspiration” videos as a part of their promotion for the upcoming anthology album PROOF.

The first of the”Proof of Inspiration” videos is from V, who narrates the reason behind the two songs he has chosen to include in the PROOF anthology album.

In the video, V reveals that he chose to include both his solo song “Singularity” as well as “00:00 (Zero O’Clock).”

I chose “Singularity” and “00:00 (Zero O’Clock)” for this album, Proof.

It is no surprise to fans that “Singularity” is an incredibly meaningful song to V. In an interview with Weverse Magazine, V revealed that when he was working on “Singularity,” the song’s creation was greatly shaped by the performance he was already envisioning.

Because I was thinking ahead for the accompanying performance, “Singularity” ended up being a song completely full of syllables with no white space. If there wasn’t going to be a performance, it would have ended up a completely different song.

Recording engineer Pdogg even revealed that they went so far as to capture the perfect mood for recording the song by having V sing in the dark.

It’s extremely hard to groove to a song like “Singularity” when the rhythm’s got a sort of lay back and there are so many intricate parts. Most of all, it had to feel seductive, so we even turned off all the lights when we recorded it.

And in his “Proof of Inspiration” video, V reveals that he put so much care and consideration into “Singularity” because it helped him come to terms with his two separate identities: “Kim Taehyung” and “artist V.”

I tended to think of Kim Taehyung, and artist V as being separate, and thought that I had to choose one or the other, as visually portrayed in the “Singularity” music video. That was when I thought hard about who I was as a person, and I felt a bit confused.

But while “Singularity” helps depict V’s struggle in trying to distinguish his identity, “00:00 (Zero O’Clock)” represents how V was able to come to terms with separating the two parts of himself.

V has come to accept both “Kim Taehyung” and “artist V” and has learned how to keep them separate and balanced.

Artist V performs on stage, and enjoys himself with ARMY, but Kim Taehyung spends ordinary days with family and friends. Now I’m able to accept both sides of myself, but also keep them separate.

-V

And thanks to “00:00 (Zero O’Clock),” V has also learned to let “the day [reset] at midnight,” and by doing so, has lessened the burden of his thoughts and worries.

I’ve lessened the burden of thinking so much, too, just like how the day resets at midnight.

-V

And to tie his explanation back into the purpose of PROOF as an anthology, showcasing BTS’s growth and how they have come to be where they are today, V concludes that both “Singularity” and “00:00 (Zero O’Clock)” represent his journey as an artist.

But I think all this time I spent pondering is the Proof that made me into who I am today.
