BTS Snubbed In Major Categories By MTV’s “2020 Video Music Awards”

They were nominated for 3 awards.

The Video Music Awards (VMA) is an annual award show hosted by MTV to honor the best artists in the industry. They released their list of nominees on July 31 to heated reviews from K-Pop fans.

BTS was nominated in three categories: “Best Pop”…

…and “Best Choreography” for their hit song “ON”.

They were, however, notably absent in the list of nominees for major categories like “Video of the Year”, “Artist of the Year”, and “Song of the Year”.

BTS’s Bang Bang Con: The Live, which broke the Guinness World Record for most viewers of a music concert livestream last June, was further not nominated for “Best Quarantine Performance”. Approximately seven hundred thousand people from 107 regions viewed the online concert.

While ARMYs were thankful for the three nominations, they also criticized MTV for failing to recognize BTS’s achievements.

Besides having the most participants in an online platform, they also matched The Beatles‘ record of having three number one albums in the Billboard 200 in under a year. They also sold 2.65 million copies of Map of the Soul: 7 just six hours after its release and had several official world records under their belt in 2019.

Their slights against BTS are not the only thing MTV is under fire for. They also continued with their controversial “Best K-Pop” category in the 2020 Video Music Awards. Perceived as a “consolation prize” for K-Pop groups, it fails to honor them alongside Western artists although they have similar achievements.

The Video Music Awards will be held on August 30 on MTV.
