“Friends” Reunion Director Clarifies What To Expect From BTS’s Appearance

Don’t get your hopes up too high!

After almost two decades, world-famous American sitcom Friends is finally returning to screens in a reunion special filled with guest stars—including BTS. What can we expect from Bangtan‘s appearance? The Friends: The Reunion director has now revealed what ARMYs will be seeing later this month.

The recent release of the Friends: The Reunion official teaser revealed that original cast members Courteney Cox, Matthew Perry, Lisa Kudrow, Matt LeBlanc, Jennifer Aniston, and David Schwimmer will all be returning for the special episode—but they won’t be alone. The reunion is set to star one of the largest lists of guest stars ever seen, including Lady Gaga, Malala Yousafzai, David Beckham, Justin Bieber, James Corden, and more. Of course, the most notable guest star for K-Pop fans is none other than BTS.

The BTS members are known to be fans of the American sitcom, and leader RM has noted several times that he learned his impeccable English skills by watching Friends. So, naturally, ARMYs were ecstatic to learn that BTS would be appearing on Friends: The Reunion.

That said, don’t get your hopes up too high. While fans have been running wild with theories about BTS’s appearance, director Ben Winston has taken to social media to clarify what to expect.

I want to manage your expectations on this,” Winston started in a reply to veteran ARMY translator @modooborahae on Twitter. Despite assumptions that BTS could be acting a significant role in the episode, the director went on to say that BTS’s appearance in Friends: The Reunion will actually be “a really short moment.”

On top of that, it looks like BTS won’t actually be acting at all. Instead, Winston says their appearance will be a brief interview segment where the members talk about why they like Friends. “They’re great of course,” Winston clarified, referring to the BTS members.

Replying to @renkiger, another ARMY on Twitter who had already guessed that BTS’s appearance would likely be geared towards RM talking about how Friends impacted him and showing the cultural importance of the show worldwide, Ben Winston called the prediction, “Spot on.” He added that while the interview is “great,” it’s also “short.”

While many fans expressed their disappointment at Ben Winston’s revelation—especially given that BTS is being touted as one of the key guest stars for the episode—ARMYs across Twitter thanked Ben Winston for his honesty and consideration for the fandom.

Given that BTS have talked about Friends before in the past, ARMYs may not be able to expect any new and exciting information from the reunion special. However, that doesn’t take away from BTS getting a great opportunity to be part of one of the most-anticipated U.S. television events in history. Friends: The Reunion is set to premiere on HBO Max on Thursday, May 27, 2021.
