BTS’s Suga Reveals What Has Changed Since His 2016 Agust D Mixtape

It’s a new time, a new world, but the same talented Agust D.

After four long years, BTS‘s Suga has made his grand return as the hip-hop king, Agust D. The world has changed greatly since 2016, but has he?

Agust D’s first mixtape, AGUST D, was released on August 15, 2016, just a day after BTS concluded the extension for their The Most Beautiful Moment in Life On Stage Tour. A total of 26,000 fans attended the final shows at Yoyogi National Gymnasium in Tokyo, Japan.

Fast forward to May 22, 2020. Agust D has just released D-2, his second mixtape, in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic as BTS prepares for their postponed Map of the Soul world tour and upcoming new album. On average, nearly three times the amount of fans who attended BTS’s 2016 Tokyo show will be seeing each Map of the Soul show once the tour commences.

In addition to rising to superstardom with BTS, in the last four years Suga has continued his solo projects. He worked as a producer for Suran, Heize, and IU, collaborated with HalseyLee So-ra, and Epik High, topped charts, broke records, and received the Melon Music Awards‘ “Hot Trend Award” for his production work.

Agust D’s new mixtape tackles the theme of change and growth, particularly his song “Moonlight”. In a new interview, TIME magazine asked Suga what has changed for him since 2016.

“My life is the same,” Suga replied. “My ways of work and day-to-day patterns haven’t changed much. Perhaps my position within the music industry? From a musician’s perspective, a change could be that I’ve had pretty decent outcome with BTS albums or with other external works.”

In addition to his career growth, Suga says he has matured over time. “Personally,” he added. “I have become more mature compared to 2016.”
