8 K-Pop Girl Group MV’s Ready To Compete In This Year’s Olympic Games

No silver medalists here!

With the Tokyo Olympics 2020 approaching their last week, it’s worth taking a look back at what K-Pop music videos are “Olympic ready”. This means that the MV features one or more potential summer Olympic sports.

1. Beach Volleyball: TWICE “Dance The Night Away”

This summertime bop from TWICE features the girls finding joy while stranded on a deserted island.

Not only do the girls explore the island, swim in the ocean and have a fashion show, but they also enjoy a rousing game of beach volleyball.

Olympic beach volleyball differs from volleyball by being played on a slightly smaller, sand court. The game itself remains mostly the same with teams playing 3 sets trying to reach 21 points. The other big difference is that the teams are made up of two players on the court.

While TWICE may have had a few more than two players on their sandy court, they still embodied the essence of the game. Chaeyoung and Jeongyeon proved to MVPs while poor Dahyun might need a bit more practice if TWICE ever tried again.

2. Boxing: Girl’s Day “I’ll Be Yours”

The most recent song from Girl’s Day featured each member in their own unique sets. These included a barber shop, a burning piano, and a boxing ring.

Member Hyeri stuns in a white ball gown while singing in front of these boxing men. That is until she decides to get in on the action herself and bring her own moves to the ring.

Olympic boxing is made up of many different weight classes and is made up of “two athletes [squaring] up to each other in a ring, and victory is gained by the athlete who more successfully lands blows to their opponent’s head and torso.

While Hyeri’s foot wear and heel stomping move might not be legal in Olympic boxing, she’s still the winner in our eyes!

3. Cycling: Chungha “Bicycle”

“Bicycle” has all the hallmarks of a Chungha video; amazing choreography, incredible visuals, and a catchy beat.

“Bicycle” also enjoyed playing around with how it could embody its song name throughout the MV. In the video, Chungha poses on bicycles, does choreography to resemble handlebars, and even forms a human-bicycle out of her dancers.

If Chungha wanted to “get on [her] bike, let’s go” at the Olympics, she’d have multiple ways of competing. Currently at the Olympics there are BMX freestyle, BMX racing, mountain bike, road, and track all under the cycling label.

However, Chungha may not qualify for the Olympics this year since her bikes in her MV are either stationary or made out of backup dancers.

4. Diving & Tennis: Red Velvet “Russian Roulette”

Red Velvet‘s “Russian Roulette” is an upbeat sounding song with a comically dark video involving many kinds of athletic activites.

The most iconic sport seen in the video is the tennis scenes with tennis balls being a motif throughout the video. Tennis is so essential to this concept that when doing their 7th anniversary Queens Mystic General Store project, fans saw tennis balls and immediately thought of this video.

Olympic tennis is a bit less lethal than the tennis seen in Red Velvet’s MV. Olympic tennis can be played as singles, doubles, or even mixed doubles and depends on serving a ball over a net and hitting it with a racket.

As previously mentioned, tennis isn’t the only sport the girls explore in this lightly lethal video. There is the implication of diving as well, although Wendy‘s attempt to “support” Yeri‘s dive definitely isn’t regulation.

5. Skateboarding: Weeekly “After School”

A viral hit, Weeekly‘s “After School” is a fun song with an MV set at a skate park and in a skate shop.

Some of the members even get to show off their skater girl skills with members Lee Jaehee and Zoa skating throughout the video and even onstage during their live stages.

Skateboarding is one of the newest sports to join the Olympic roster with it being added at the Tokyo Olympics 2020. The Olympics officially define a skateboard as “a short, narrow board with two small wheels attached to the bottom of either end.” The goal of Olympic skateboarding is to perform tricks in either the park or street event.

The girls are set to make a comeback this month so we can’t to see what other athletic skills this rookie group might reveal to us!

6. Softball: Brave Girls “High Heels”

Before “Rollin” took over, Brave Girls had the song “High Heels” in which members of the group rocked the aforementioned shoe in different settings where you wouldn’t expect it.

One of those settings was the baseball stadium. While it may be debatable whether former member Hyeran is playing baseball or softball, what isn’t debatable is how stunning she looks.

While baseball and softball may seem similar, the Olympics explain that “Softball differs from baseball in that it uses a smaller playing area, with a shorter distance between pitcher and batter.” There are a few other key differences including type of bat and style of pitches thrown.

No matter whether it’s baseball or softball that’s being played, it won’t count if you’re hitting a shoe instead of the ball. Maybe this time Brave Girls have struck out on the sport but not on the fun.

7. Table Tennis: Orange Caramel “Lipstick”

This quirky After School subunit had many hits over the years but “Lipstick” was their most athletic.

Orange Caramel brought their unique charms to table tennis in this MV with the girls all getting to try their hand at the sport.

While the names are similar, the Olympics explain that the difference between table tennis and tennis is that “in tennis where a player serves for a whole game, in table tennis the service changes after every two points have been scored.” Other than that the rules remain mostly the same.

The girls moves may look cool but a team of three isn’t allowed. We wouldn’t want to see Orange Caramel split up so for now they’ll have to stick to singing instead of their secret talent, table tennis.

8. Track and Field: LOONA 1/3 “Love&Live”

Another subunit, LOONA 1/3 made their debut with this cute song set to a sporty video.

In the video, the quartet made up of members HaseulViviHyunjin, and Heejin are all preparing for a relay race while Vivi is dealing with a robotic issue.

Listed by the Olympics under “Athletics”, track events are made up many different categories including runs, relays, and hurdles. Events can be as short as 100m or as long as 3,000m in the case of the Steeplechase.

LOONA’s relay skills are impressive but with Vivi displaying that automaton stamina, we’re not sure if they’d let her qualify for the team.
