As sudden reports of Tao departing from EXO first surfaced through Chinese media, iQIYI, SM Entertainment was quick enough to respond that these reports were merely false, groundless rumors.
On April 16th, a Chinese media outlet iQIYI first reported that EXO’s Tao would soon be terminating his contract with SM Entertainment, which would ultimately result in his departure from the group.
Following these initial reports, many news outlets from both South Korea and China had attempted to contact and reach the agency for confirmation on the news, which Chinese outlet Sina then released news that an SM Entertainment representative had stated that they were “not sure” of the rumored departure.
However, after a short while of releasing that news, Sina soon retracted the said quote from their original article. The article from Sina soon only stated that no representative from Tao’s party had given a comment regarding the reports yet.
As of 6:25pm KST, however, SM Entertainment released a short official statement to Star News regarding the reports of Tao’s leave, saying, “The reports from the Chinese media about EXO’s Tao terminating his contract are absolutely false, groundless rumors.”
